Sustainable Manufacturer
Overview
At Glendining Signs, we are dedicated to addressing the sustainability challenges inherent in our industry, particularly concerning energy consumption, material choices, and waste management. We want to become the leaders in sustainable signage solutions.
Challenges and Initiatives
One of our primary challenges has been the environmental impact of plastics used in signage manufacturing. Historically, PVC was a significant substrate, despite its poor recyclability. Recognising the need for change, we transitioned to polypropylene, a more environmentally friendly alternative that is easier to recycle. We also strive to move towards materials that decompose naturally, further reducing our environmental footprint
In 2020, we identified a critical area for improvement—unnecessary plastic packaging. By replacing materials such as bubble wrap with corrugated card packaging containing 50% recycled content, we successfully reduced our CO2 equivalent emissions by approximately 22 tonnes per year.
Environmental Impact and Benefits
The results of our efforts are clear: the carbon dioxide reduction equates to avoiding 56,361 miles of driving in an average passenger vehicle or not charging a smartphone 2,728,172 times annually. These achievements demonstrate not only our commitment to sustainability but also the positive operational and environmental outcomes for our business.
Technological Innovations
To further mitigate our environmental impact, we have upgraded approximately 70% of our printers to use inks certified with GREENGUARD GOLD, meeting rigorous health and emissions standards. This transition supports improved indoor air quality and aligns with our sustainability goals. Additionally, our adoption of LED cold cure technology has significantly reduced energy consumption and eliminated mercury UV lamps and associated waste
Waste Management
Managing waste responsibly is a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy. Through direct-to-media UV-cured printing processes, we have minimised waste associated with flexible PVC vinyl media. We partner with specialised recycling firms like Grundon and local companies to recycle all waste materials, including metals, paper, and plastics, effectively diverting these resources from landfills and incineration.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, we will continue our commitment to carbon neutrality, officially achieved in January 2024. Our ongoing dedication to sustainability will continue to drive innovation and best practices within the signage manufacturing industry.
Conclusion
Our journey towards sustainable manufacture at Glendining Signs underscores our proactive approach to environmental stewardship. By prioritising material innovation, adopting eco-friendly technologies, and implementing robust waste management practices, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also set a precedent for responsible business practices in our sector. We remain committed to leading by example and inspiring positive change within our industry and beyond.
