How to Help Reduce Stress at Work
Work related stress is the most common type of stress, and with April being Stress Awareness Month, what better time to evaluate how you can help reduce stress at work. Workplaces have a duty of care to take reasonable steps to help minimise the stresses employees experience at work. Through having informative signs in place, it can help employees feel less anxious in the workplace. So, to raise awareness and help reduce stress in the workplace, Glendining Signs has explored how you can use signage, to reduce the stress felt by employees while at work.
What is Stress Awareness Month?
April is Stress Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness of the negative impact that stress can bring to people. Throughout April, many charities and businesses will be discussing the effects on our mental and physical health and trying to reduce the stigma that is associated with it. The month has been observed by the National Institute of Health since 1992 – click here to find out more about the NIH.
Stress is one of the biggest health factors that workplaces are facing right now, and taking part in stress awareness month is just one of the ways to raise our understanding of the causes and signs of workplace stress. Looking out for the signs of stress, such as sickness absences, decreased performance, mood swings and being withdrawn, and acting on the signs early can reduce or remove the causes entirely.
Why Is it Important?
Workplace stress doesn’t always get the priority it deserves, but don’t let that stop you promoting awareness of it! Having a strong system in place for employee’s welfare is essential for the smooth running of a business and having that additional support available can instantly reduce stress at work. Allowing employees to be listened to and understood can make such a difference to their physical and mental health.
The presence of noticeboards and placards makes it clear that assistance is always available. Businesses can prevent unwanted absences and poor performance by supporting employees in controlling their stress, so maintaining the smooth operation of the company. Using your company's resources effectively can have a significant impact and ensure that you protect the company's bottom line.
What Can You Do?
As a workplace there are lots of things you can do to help improve employee wellbeing, including reducing stress. Firstly, having the correct health and safety signage is essential for every workplace to help you meet safety standards, but also to provide employees the peace of mind that they know what to do in the event of an emergency. Displaying clear information about where the fire exits are, the correct COVID safety guidelines or where the first aid box is kept can all help in reducing workplace stress.
Having further assistance resources in place, such as displaying noticeboards with positive messages on, or additional support information on topics like stress in the workplace, can help. As well as using clip frames to communicate important promotional information and support posters, can give people peace of mind.
Whether the information displayed is on how to reduce stress levels at work or how to deal with stress at work, all these additional resources strive to improve stress levels for all people at work. These forms of indirect communication can be used in many ways, such as suggestions where employees can share their ideas for improvements or concerns. Even using posters to encourage reporting issues that can then be discussed by management and followed up are the little things that can overall improve the wellbeing of your employees.
