Safety Sign Guide
What is a Safety Sign?
A safety sign provides information or instruction about safety or health at work by means of a combination of shape, colour and a symbol or pictogram which is rendered visible by lighting of sufficient intensity. Signboards may be accompanied by supplementary text, e.g. 'Fire exit', alongside the symbol of a moving person.
Legislation
All of our signs comply with the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 and all symbols have been updated to the current BS EN ISO 7010 standard.
Types of Safety Signs
Each type of safety sign has a specific colour, symbol type and meaning:
Prohibition SignsA sign prohibiting behaviour likely to increase or cause danger.
Symbol or Pictogram: Round shape - Black pictogram on a white background with red edging and diagonal line (the red part to take up at least 35% of the area of the sign). Example: No access for unauthorised persons. View our Prohibitions Signs or Smoking Signs |

Mandatory SignsA sign prescribing specific behaviour.
Symbol or Pictogram: Round shape - White pictogram on a blue background (the blue part to take up at least 50% of the area of the sign). Example: Eye protection must be worn. View our Mandatory Signs or Protective Equipment Signs |

Warning SignsA sign giving warning of a hazard or danger.
Symbol or Pictogram: Triangular shape - Black pictogram on a yellow background with black edging (the yellow part to take up at least 50% of the area of the sign). Example: Danger electricity. View our Warning Signs |

Fire Equipment SignsA sign giving information on fire equipment.
Symbol or Pictogram: Rectangular or square shape - White pictogram on a red background (the red part to take up at least 50% of the area of the sign). Example: Fire extinguisher. View our Fire Equipment Signs |

Safe Condition SignsA sign giving information on emergency exits, first aid, or rescue facilities.
